The most obvious difference between bamboo and cotton is how they feel to the touch. Bamboo is much softer than cotton purely because the two types of fibre are very different. Cotton fibres have a coarse and rough structure, and bamboo fibres have a smooth and rounder structure. This also explains the beautiful silky lustre of bamboo sheets.
Hot sleepers will also notice a big difference in how bamboo sheets make you feel. This is because bamboo has superior thermoregulation qualities and is more breathable than cotton. For hot sleepers, this can make a major difference in the quality of sleep as you will not wake up hot and sweaty on bamboo sheets.
For babies, it is especially important to avoid overheating so using all-natural and thermo-regulating bedding like bamboo is recommended.
Another major advantage of bamboo is its eco-friendliness. Bamboo only needs sunlight and rainwater to grow. Cotton on the other hand has the dubious record of being the water guzzler amongst textiles!
We think the next generation will thank us for making climate-conscious decisions.
How should I care for my new bamboo sheets?
Bamboo cot sheets are easy to clean and can be machine-washed. However, we recommend taking extra care when washing your sheets since bamboo textile is fragile when wet. Therefore, it’s advisable to use extra care when washing and drying your bamboo products.
Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle. (You don't need hot water because bamboo is naturally antimicrobial anyway). Always use a gentle laundry detergent, preferably liquid, and avoid bleaching agents or optical brighteners. It's also best to avoid fabric softeners (the sheets are ultra-soft already!) as fabric softener tends to ‘clog’ the fabric decreasing its natural breathability.
Washing your bamboo sheets separately is recommended as washing your bamboo sheets together with other fabrics may cause damage, tears or pilling. Line drying in the shade is best but if not practical, you may tumble dry on a delicate, cool setting.
My baby suffers from eczema. Will a bamboo sheet be right for them?
Yes! While every child is different, switching to a bamboo cot fitted sheet or bassinet sheet is great for children suffering from skin conditions including eczema and dermatitis. Thanks to their super-soft, hypoallergenic material, bamboo cot sheets aren’t just great for kids — adult eczema sufferers can also benefit from switching to bamboo bedding!
Bamboo textile is hypo-allergenic and naturally repels allergens such as dust mites, mould and mildew making it gentle on skin. As such, it’s an excellent choice for people suffering from eczema and allergies, as well as for those with sensitive skin and delicate baby skin. Read more about the benefits of bamboo here.
Healthline says ‘Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, is a common skin condition marked by itchy and inflamed patches of skin”. It can occur anywhere but usually affects the arms, inner elbows, backs of the knees, or head (particularly the cheeks and the scalp). It’s not contagious, and, in some cases, becomes less severe with age. Using bamboo sheets is a perfect way to soothe eczema symptoms for babies, toddlers and adults alike.
How are bamboo sheets made?
Bamboo is one of the most sustainable natural resources on our planet. It regenerates naturally after harvesting, needs no irrigation and grows naturally pesticide free due to its antimicrobial properties. Learn more about the benefits of bamboo.
Although there is no doubt that bamboo itself is highly sustainable, not all methods for textile production, be it cotton or bamboo, are as environmentally friendly. That’s why we are proud to say our bamboo sheets are sustainably manufactured using a ‘closed-loop’ process, without the use of harmful chemicals.
